research into genre (characters)

characters

the main in this genre stereotypically are normal , as this helps viewers to relate to them , which makes for the storyline to be more thrilling and hard hitting , as the story , however far fetched (woman in black/devils backbone) still strikes a chord in the viewers. characters such as arthur kipp ( woman in black) and sam tyler (life on mars) show this. The idea is that it's just an everyday guy , who gets plunged into a dangerous situation , so the audience believes it may happen to them.

arthur kipps: this character , although from a time different to ours , still has the qualities that are still seen today in average adults , mature , rational , unbelieving in any sort of strange behaviour ( such as ghosts , heaven and hell ect) and the situation which leads to him been plunged into danger is one that could really happen , a business trip out of town . He is just seen as a very normal guy , almost boring even .

sam tyler: a very modern day character , working in the police force , who again gets thrown into danger in an everyday routine. This character can be very relatable to people nowadys , a man very wrapped up in his job , somewhat misunderstood , but again on the whole looks quite bland and boring , fitting into the steryotype.

There also is a strange and sadistic character , who thrives on the misfortune of others , characters such as the master (doctor who) , this character is usually a human (or at least in the form of a human) but maybe have a alien or supernatural side , however of course they could be just a sadistic human (hannibal lecter)

the master: a sadistic "alien" however in human form , who's goal is to destroy the world , and thrives in the pain of all others around him , this again still can relate to audiences as he , on the face , does look like an average guy who you might meet out in the street
